The decision of a short-term on-call midwife in Lumsden in another bandaid solution from the Southern District Health Board, Clutha-Southland MP Hamish Walker says.
“The Southern District Health Board has clearly missed the fact that rural women and babies are at risk and offering a short-term bandaid will not make the issue go away,” Mr Walker says.
“The Southern District Health Board isn’t even fronting the cost of the on-call midwife, but the College of Midwives are funding it.”
“It also poses more questions – does this mean post-natal care will now be offered at the former Lumsden Maternity Centre? Can the midwife assist others midwives?”
“These questions need to be answered so everyone is on the same page.”
“I’m also hopeful the Health Select Committee will release its findings on my petition to save the Lumsden Maternity Centre next week.”
“Following everything that has happened, including four women giving birth in emergency situations unable to make it to a primary birthing unit, I will be calling for an inquiry into the downgrade decision.”
