My petition to Save the Lumsden Maternity Centre is on hold for another week as the Health Select Committee has not yet concluded its deliberations, Clutha-Southland MP Hamish Walker says.
“While I am bound by confidentiality on the deliberations which occurred in today’s meeting, I’m hopeful a decision will be made next week,” Mr Walker says.
“I have also asked the Health Select Committee to conduct an inquiry into the decision to downgrade the Lumsden Maternity Centre.”
“The Southern District Health Board has also announced a review, which only looks into the implementation of the hub model.”
“The review will not investigate the downgrade at all which I believe is not going far enough, as the entire strategy needs reviewing.”
“The hub model is clearly not working and it is rural mothers and babies being put at risk.”
“The College of Midwives are so concerned about the safety of rural mothers, babies and midwives, they are funding a second midwife at Lumsden 24-7.”
