It is a sad day for Lumsden, following Government MPs voting against a motion which would have investigated the decision to downgrade the Lumsden Maternity Centre, Clutha-Southland MP Hamish Walker says.
“The investigation was needed as the Southern District Health Board has ruled out reviewing the overall strategy of the hub model and how the downgrade decision was made,” Mr Walker says.
“They are only looking into the circumstances that led to the roadside birth and the roll out of the hub model. They are not looking into the downgrade decision because they know it is the wrong one.”
The motion was put forward that the Health Select Committee conduct an inquiry into the process followed by the Southern District Health Board, leading to the plan for maternity services in the southern region, specifically the decision to downgrade the Lumsden Maternity Centre.
“While deliberations on my petition to Save the Lumsden Maternity Centre continue, the motion put forward was voted down by Government MP’s, including local List MPs Mark Patterson and Liz Craig.”
“We’ve received nothing more than lip service from our local list MPs, who are obviously quite content with mothers and babies safety being put at risk.”
“Voting down this motion is absolutely ludicrous given four mothers have given birth in emergency situations.”
“The wrong decision was made in downgrading the Lumsden Maternity Centre, but instead of putting the people first, the Government is putting itself first.”
“The truth will come out that the centre should not have been downgraded, I just hope the unthinkable does not happen before it does.”
