Today’s announcement by the Government to move to a level three alert immediately and level four alert in 48 hours in response to Covid-19 is the right decision, Clutha-Southland MP Hamish Walker says.
“I welcome this move by the Government which is needed to protect the lives and livelihoods of New Zealanders,” Mr Walker says.
“This is a time where we need to do all we can to stop the spread of Covid-19 and this means taking this step of all non-essential services closing.”
“I understand how uneasy this will make many people but we will get through this.”
“I am extremely pleased the Government has extended the wage subsidy to include larger businesses. This will make a difference to the larger tourism players in Queenstown who collectively employ a few thousand people.”
“We need to protect ourselves, our family and friends, and to do this we need to follow the rules now in place.”
“What we do now will shape how this battle unfolds and puts us in the best possible position to get through Covid-19 as unscathed as possible.”
“I have also asked the Government to urgently confirm what assistance is in place for the many visa holders in Queenstown who are out of work and can’t get home due to border closures”.
“In Queenstown, the majority of workers are on work visas and many can’t get home and have also been made redundant. We need to ensure we support them as a community”.
