Clutha-Southland MP Hamish Walker has thrown his support behind the Tuatapere Hump Ridge Track’s application to become a Department of Conservation (DOC) Great Walk.
“I’m thrilled to support the application. The Hump Ridge Track showcases some of the best of New Zealand – it would be an excellent fit with the existing network of Great Walks in the Clutha-Southland electorate and would have the added benefit of making Southland a more desirable tourist destination,” Mr Walker says.
“Having another Great Walk in the Clutha-Southland electorate would give people even more of a reason to visit our magnificent district and the economic benefits from greater tourist numbers are clear. Our businesses would thrive and new jobs would be created from the increase in visitor numbers that comes with a Great Walk’s popularity.
“It would be a huge benefit for the Southland region and would ensure continued tourism growth in the regions.”
Mr Walker’s support came in the form of a letter to the Department of Conservation, included in the Tuatapere Hump Ridge Track’s application.
